SMTP - it's provide you with ability to send e-mails through the server on your local network. Sending e-mails will be faster and server will be in control of your e-mails delivery.
FTP - if you want your customers or partners can download some information or files from your network you can put it on your own ftp-server espesialy configured for you. Your customers or partners will have to use password to login to your server to prevent access of unautorized persons.
